I am pleasantly thrilled with the progressive direction of their music. It really refreshes my sense of original heavy music. It definitely delves into the concept themes that reminds me of some of the best albums of 2000 in the heavy music boom. It gives me the feeling that all the work Botch did wasn't in vain. Not that it was in vain, but rather a feeling of loss when they did break up. I desperately wanted to hear a band that would peak my interest again and this release really hits hard. It's a progressive view on hardcore & metal while not giving into the cliches of the metalcore scene. It's simply not that cheesy. It's filled with just enough layered guitar grooves/sweeps that I can't simply throw it in the Botch wanna-bes category. It's a fucking awesome record (brilliant even!) with plenty of technical hooks that rival even the Dillinger Escape Plan and many avant-garde hardcore acts.

The snow is beginning to melt outside from an ice storm that knocked out power in more than 100,000 homes. It's the beginning of spring, or at least the doorstep of the reviving of the human spirit. The cold can be a beast.

In a month, I move into my new apartment with Jennie. I am really looking forward to moving into the new place and building a decorative home. Jennie is fascinated that a male that watches football can be domesticated and actually give a damn about where he lives and what it looks like.

I graduate in May from U of L. I am pretty happy that I finally have a big piece of paper that proves I passed the college experience. The hard part is finding a decent job that will pay for my school loans. I have a resume and a fantastic cover letter. So far, the Ulmer Career Center on campus is doing a great job of making my resume better.

Rainbow Six takes up some of my time nowadays. Jay, your copy is coming soon. Just wait buddy.

I saw my mother the other day and she is doing good. It was her birthday yesterday and she is visiting my aunt. It's nice to hear that she's having fun.

Info On The New NAPALM DEATH!

UK's legendary grindcore masters NAPALM DEATH are currently recording their new album, "Time Waits For No Slave", with producer Russ Russell. Drums have been tracked at Parlour Studios in Kettering and guitars, bass and vocals will be done at Foel Studios in Wales. The band will then return to Parlour for the mixing sessions. Expect the new album to surface in early 2009 via Century Media Records.

NAPALM DEATH bassist Shane Embury recently spoke to Paul Travers of Suite101.com about the band's upcoming thirteenth full-length studio album. "We've got about seventeen songs together," Embury said. "I guess it's moving on again from the last album [2006's 'Smear Campaign']. It's still very fast and hopefully heavy. There's a couple of strange kind of moments in the music, with a little more experimentation and a little more discordance in the guitar perhaps. I think Barney's [Greenway] trying to move forward vocally in some areas like he did on tracks like 'Smear Campaign' and 'Persona Non Grata'."

Burning Fight Fest

May 2-3rd. Burning Fight Festival in Chicago, IL. I will see the great Disembodied reformed in front of my eyes as well as Unbroken and many others. I can't wait for this to happen. It's going to be so much fun.

I just got advised this morning at the Reinhardt Academic Center and I am on track to graduate in May 2009. I have only three classes after this semester and I am so excited to be getting out of school. Why did it take so long? I had some really awesome jobs since High School. I've done everything from mapping, aerial photography, editing video, working in news production, and of course screaming in a few bands. I'll have to admit I wasted time getting this done as prompt as possible. Being a craftsman, I constantly wonder why I am graduating with an Bachelor's in Accounting. Easy.... it's for the money. Those dollar bills (yall). I know it's not everything, but I really want to have a house, family, and be able to live comfortably. I am not necessarily the capitalist, but rather I am planning on starting a charitable business shortly after graduation. I've been contemplating it for years and many people have tried to take this idea and use it for pure capitalistic means, but I refuse. If I go back to focusing on the music business, I am going to concentrate on making the business benefit people in need. I am already planning a project to be completed in the Summer where all proceeds from the live event will go straight to the ALS Association Kentucky chapter. From then on, I really have to wonder if I want to start a non-profit organization or make it an LLC or S-Corporation where I have means of making equity from my plans. I will still donate a large portion of what I do to charity, however I want to be able to indulge in my success (just a little).

I have class in 30 minutes and I am so tired I could pass out. I am also very broke and looking for a new job. I have some leads, but nothing concrete at the moment. All I can hope for is a business during these horrible times will take a chance on this poor savage soul.

Grooverider (born Raymond Bingham[1]) is the stage name of a drum and bass DJ from London. Grooverider began his DJing career at illegal raves and warehouse parties in Britain in the late eighties, and rose to prominence with partner Fabio through his innovative sets at influential club nights such as Rage and Speed. At these nights, Grooverider championed the emerging UK breakbeat culture that would eventually split from house and techno to become hardcore, from which developed jungle, which would in turn become known as drum and bass. He is widely recognized as a "godfather" of drum and bass for his pioneering work in the development of this genre.

On 24 November 2007 Grooverider was arrested at Dubai International Airport for possession of 2.16 grams of cannabis, hours before a sold-out show at superclub The Lodge. He claimed he had forgotten it was in a pair of his trousers. On the 19 February 2008 he was sentenced to four years imprisonment, to be followed by immediate deportation.[1][2]

I am going into an interview for a company here in town. It's on the East End of Louisville and pays pretty well and is going to be full-time. I heard they are very flexible and that works for me. I have a year left of school and money is a definite need at the moment.

I've been listening to Harvey Milk lately.

Harvey Milk are an experimental rock band that formed in Athens, Georgia in the early 1990s. The band, despite playing numerous live shows, releasing a slew of 7" singles and three full length albums, never received much attention outside of their local fanbase. Even when they were together, Harvey Milk releases were notoriously hard to find. It was not until years after the band's demise that their singles, as well as all three full length albums, saw re-release through various labels, most notably Relapse Records. While Harvey Milk invariably draws comparisons to the Melvins, due to their penchant for slow, heavy riffs, the band has touched upon such artists as ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and Leonard Cohen as influences in their music. They even went so far as to perform a live show consisting of nothing but Hank Williams covers. Harvey Milk recently released their new album Life... The Best Game In Town and are touring the eastern and southern US as well as Germany, England, Belgium, France and Scotland.

They are named after Harvey Milk, San Francisco, California's first openly gay city supervisor.

I am chilling and think about a lot of things. Mostly, what I want to do after college. I've been in for so long that I feel like I should be doing something important. With no education for the Summer, I have been relaxing as of late. I recommend this to many people. I guess I am getting old. I have really fell off the radar socially. I have found that my life is slow and steady. I like the lack of chaos.

Sometimes, I think about just packing up my camera and just start walking across the country. I'll be a traveling photographer and see the Earth for what it really is. I'd like to go and talk to people about how to change the world. Stop ignorance, hate, and talk to people about their story. How are they trying to change their lives? Also, how is my life changing for seeing the random people on the road? It seems like the American Dream in a nutshell. The notion of that kind of freedom in America makes me really want to embark on something greater than the normal routine.

Oh, and I had horrible service at Gyro Express in Radcliff, KY. Go figure.

Today was a great day because I got electrocuted by a faulty power supply. A customer brought in a power supply that looked "a little weird". For years, I've never really liked the direction of Victory Records. It seems contrived and an example of how labels will sell out in order to get on MTV2 or be the epidemic of a dozen emo-core bands. For what it's worth, I thought think Victory has been the same since the late 90s. Their hardcore values have changed and much recently I have found that they've been recruiting a thousand new hardcore and death-core style bands. I find this interesting and appealing because I usually like a band that has some deep guttural riffs and a good production to boot.

If there's one band that sticks out as of late, it's Emmure with their sophomore release "The Respect Issue" featuring boxing influenced artwork. Not to mention the appearance of Kurt Angle in the artwork looking like he's going to kick someone's ass. My roommate who is a wrestling fan freaked out that Kurt Angle and Victory Records have teamed up using a celebrity focused marketing campaign.

So, what about the music?

It's in the vain of heavy bands like Ion Dissonance, The Acacia Strain, and a bit of Meshuggah influenced production. The first four songs are crushing and are full of drop C breakdowns. After the first four songs, the album opens up with more melody, but I find myself listening to the first four songs more than any of the others on the album. The album has good production and does have it's moments where the band shines. It's what to expect from a younger hardcore band from Connecticut. Thick breakdowns that make you want to lift weights and throw some kung-fu punches in a fit of adolescent anger. If you are into that, then this is for you.

Their fans? From the videos on You Tube, it's mostly those hardcore kids that wear flat bill hats and pretend like they are having a fist fight with oxygen. Where has real hardcore gone? Is this hardcore? I don't know, but if you like your music to have a hard heavy punch then there's plenty on this album.

I had a crazy weekend full of work and studying for my tax return project. Gladly, it's over and all I have to focus on is my finals. Things have been good lately and I can't complain.

I hung out with my mom this evening and really enjoyed the nice things she is doing for me. I really appreciate it and admire the support of my own parents in a time where I need it the most.

I am so sick of my ex-girlfriend's love for the Cincinnati Reds. It makes me want to vomit. As of right now, the Reds have a 4-3 record and the Cubs have a 3-3 record. I hope the Cubs make an example out of our closest competition in the National League Central division. The Cubs have a rough road ahead when they have to battle the Milwaukee Brewers again which proved to be a 1-2 series. The Chicago Cubs are a comeback team and will more than likely go on a winning streak very soon. Perhaps, we need another Lou Pinella outburst, so we can get focused. Who am I kidding? It's the beginning of the season. Too early to think we are out.

Classes are almost over.

I have a federal tax return project due next week. I also have to turn in a stock market summary by the 16th and turn in my marketing logbook. All in all, RadioShack is working me every day I am not in school. So, time is very valuable and if you don't see much blogging. Blame school, not me.

Killer Album: Disfear's Live The Storm

I've known about Disfear for a few years because it has Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates fame. I never really got into it, but after listening to Live The Storm. I need to catch up on this fantastic hardcore punk band that doesn't easily categorize itself among the other Relapse Records groups. However, it shreds and it wields a powerful blow in terms of keeping true to it's punk conventions. Gang vocals, driving straightforward riffs, and the magnificent D-Beat are all featured on this release. Coincidentally, Disfear is comprised of the guitarist of Entombed and you can really tell after the first minute what you are in store for. Tomas Lindberg's vocals are powerful, gritty, and figuratively cut-throat.

I am sitting in the Elkstrom Library on University of Louisville's campus. I love when the school year is wrapping up and there's not much left to do in class other than study for the final or complete a final project. I feel good and the weather is helping me enjoy Louisville a bit more. I was really hating the rain and snow throughout the Winter.

I rode my bike down to the Riverfront last night and hung out with an old friend. It was fun (even though it was really cold). We walked her dog and I spotted a bit of snot in her nose. She was embarassed, but it's ok. We all have boogers. Boogers are pretty gross, but I always find myself inspecting them when I blow my nose. Gross, but you know you do it too.

I am not a sore loser. My team lost, but we were close and held our own until the final minutes of the game. University of Louisville has acquired a great set of bench players that can make points and set the groundwork for an even better season next year. I am proud of the Cardinals, and amazed at Tyler Hansbrough's success regardless of the lost. It was disappointing for the Cardinals as it seems that Hansbrough took every shot and scored. I am so happy that the Cardinals didn't give up and continued to fight for every possession.

Go Davidson. Beat those Jayhawks.

It seems like Broncos players have been running away from Denver to sign big dollar contracts. Jovan Walker left to go to the Oakland Raiders. Jason Elam (who won most of their games last season) goes off to Atlanta to play with the Falcons. Offensive Lineman Chris Myers got traded to Houston. To top things off, Brandon Marshall injures his arm severely wrestling with family members.

How low can they go? How many games will they win if any? I have faith in the Broncos, but I am really wondering what their gameplan is.

This is probably the best game that Louisville has played in a long time. They didn't show any weakness on the floor except for a pass from Padgett to Terrence Williams head in a fast break defensive play gone wrong. Louisville plays Tennessee which has a better record, but with the way Louisville has been playing as of late. It should prove to be a great game and I am sure Pitino will get the Cardinals ready for a tough game. It's a Big East/SEC showdown and the Cardinals are optimistic.

It all starts in defense. If they can play good defense, the Cardinals can run deep into the tournament and possibly beat the North Carolina Tarheels.

AT&T has been pushing their "smart phones" out of store with aggressive pricing and a good wide selection of PDAs. I bought the Samsung Blackjack 2 from RadioShack for $50 with a new 2 year agreement. Keep in mind, however, that all new 2 year activations or upgrades require the PDA/Blackberry internet package which runs $30 extra a month. Some customers may find this inconvenient or an extra charge that will not benefit them, but the plan is practically made for the BJ2 and I couldn't see having a PDA without the unlimited internet package that they offer. AT&T also let's you set up multiple email accounts on the phone using Xpress Mail application. All POP2 email servers like Yahoo!, Gmail, and a host of others will work with the phone allowing the user to send/receive at his/her desire. BJ2 is equipped with Windows Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player 6 are installed onto the phone making it have the ability to play Windows Media Video, MP3s, JPGs, and more. With the bluetooth technology built-in, you can transfer your PC/MAC files over with little effort. Keep in mind that the ActiveSync cable that comes with the phone will not work with Apple computers.

Overall, I am happy with my investment and will use the phone more for it's text messaging and internet capabilities.

My Bracket: Cardinal Hopeful Against UCLA

I make some interesting brackets. They are either interesting in that they suck horribly or they have a matchups that no one could preconceive. Either way, I am a Louisville Cardinals fan and I got them going against UCLA in the National Championship Game. Go ahead and laugh. I think this is the year that the Cardinals will make an appearance. Go ahead and go for UNC and Memphis, but I'll stick with my team to the bitter end and hopefully that end comes at the end of a long winning steak in the tournament.

Next game is against Oklahoma 3/23 @ 5PM. Go CARDS!

Typically, I find most of the death metal scene kinda boring and repetitive unless it's something that has immense technical proficiency. Although, I am not a prude in this case. I do like a well-written song. Well-written death metal is hard to come by. Recently, I picked up the new Hate Eternal and I have to say I am in love with this album. It seems as though the album just starts with intense "fury" and burns through 40 minutes of Jade Simonetto's fast intense drumming style. The new drummer fits well. In this album, you can actually distinguish the awesome Alex Webster bass playing from Cannibal Corpse. Make no exceptions, this album has some great riffs and doesn't get repetitive as most technically proficient albums. It's straight forward in it's appeal and doesn't try to make everything a blur and forgettable. The riffs are constructed to make a punch in the gut and rip out your intestines. I have nothing bad to say about this album. Erik Rutan has progressed more and retains his viciousness.

With the departure of Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, the economy is becoming a more dynamic and volatile beast that is relentless scaring off investors and crippling several sectors of our economy. Crude oil prices have reached a high point of $103.95 (Davis, King C1) a barrel and are expected to rise because of an unnerving testimony from current Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke. Bernanke wants to lower interest rates. Lowering interest rates will “inject more liquidity into the financial system”, says economist Philip Verleger. Verleger believes this will cause investors to buy hard assets and stray away from investing in other financial instruments. Hard assets such as gold are inflation-safe item that is still half of its inflation-adjusted price from 1978 to 1981 (WSJ Market Data Group). So what does this mean for the American economy? Some politicians believe that this is a bad step for the American prosperous economy because it will decrease investments in capital assets that create goods and services. Will innovation and much of the U.S. industries fade out? Reorganize? Or just completely collapse? All of these predictions are hard to formulate even in the wake of a war in Iraq, a disastrous housing market, and a “trickle-down” economic situation that has been getting the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Bernanke does offer the statement that the Federal Reserve is not very concerned with inflation, but rather the economy in general. During his testimony, he led many U.S. analysts to believe that it’s just adjusting the interest rates to battle the failing U.S. dollar will lead to the sale of oil, gold, and other commodities. Bart Melek, a Global Commodity Strategist says that gold has hit it’s high yet because “inflation today is nowhere near as high as inflation during that period (1978-1981).” Questions are arising about why the price of oil has continued to increase and surge higher. OPEC Saudi oil minister, Ali Naimi explains that “a vision of tightness in the market which is unfounded” is leading to the surge of petroleum prices. However, Jeffrey Currie from Goldman Sachs believes that the lack of investment and ineffective production are leading the high prices. These two remarks offer argument to the problem, but they maybe the solution to the problem. The lack of oil and the production shortfalls are a part of a bigger problem. This is a problem of over-consumption and a crazed addiction to inefficient gas usage by most Americans. There is simply not enough oil to fuel an entire world, day in and day out, for very many more years.
I believe there is better use for the money that is spent excessively on gas. Being a commodity, it is hard to regulate the usage of every person that drives a car, plane, or the average job using his lawnmower. The excessive oil prices, in my opinion, are reducing the amount of investment in businesses worldwide into making more effective and efficient products that serve a global “green” purpose. On the other side, the addiction is just one problem in the array of problems concerning the American population. In the face of a declining housing market, people are defaulting on payments. In order to battle this problem, cutting interest rates may help the problem temporarily. A strict focus on the housing market and battling the drooping dollar can reduce a lot of the inflation associated with oil and other goods & services.

Spent the Day Moving

So I am finally moved in with just a few things left to move from the old apartment. I am truly exhausted and I want to thank some people for the help with the move. Particularly, Andy Warren and Steve Johnson. Also, thanks for boxes, RadioShack.

The weather was alot better today than in the last month. It is supposed to hit 64 tomorrow and be partly sunny. Louisville has some really great Spring weather. Summer is a little intense, but other than that. I am ready and standing with open arms to welcome the sun back into my existence.

One thing, it is so loud near Brook and Oak Street.

Stan Getz - Bossa Nova

I finally got ahold of this album and it's unfortunate I haven't really listened to Stan Getz very much. At the Jazz Factory a few weeks ago, I saw a Brazilian quartet for the first time and was really amazed by the clever Latin percussion and the short choppy chords on the piano. Unfortunately, there was not a saxophone player in the quartet. After listening to Bossa Nova, I realize that there is an special place for the saxophone in this form of jazz. It really opens up the melodic space on the recording and is very uplifting at the same time. Guitarist João Gilberto and Stan Getz both won multiple Grammy awards for their collaboration. The future for me looks to have a great addiction to this album and trying to find other albums by the late and great Getz.

The 80s and Now

Does it feel as though we are more socially conscious presently? I watched a marketing video from the 80s and felt as though there was some kind of social ignorance and confusion about how people represented themselves. Did Reagan take away our identity? Or did MTV rape us with all those controversial videos of long hair alcoholic metal dudes? I don't know.

There was one part of the video that I found hilarious. There was freeze frames of different marketing segments. There was an adventurous couple with a large amount of discretionary income with a boat on the sea. There was also a young couple with a child that could be potential first-time home buyers. Then there was a freeze frame of two kids wearing punk t-shirts. One of the kids was wearing an Exploited shirt and they had what looked like some form of mohawk. The punk kids had no explanation of market segmentation that they could have been in. It was aptly labeled "???". I find this really funny considering that now the punk crowd is completely marketable and can be easily defined in the industry. We have gone from "social rejects with no future" to a readily penetrable market that now have niche stores and merchandise.

Next time you walk into a Hot Topic, please think about how long it took for the fashion and music industry to cater to the punk, metal, and hardcore scene. Then, think about what is going to happen in the future. There will be more and more assumptions about our youth and the market that very soon it will be saturated with over produced and unnecessary crap. It's already happening and are you ready for the next big thing? The record labels, fashion industry, and marketing industries will be ready to capitalize on it.

Moving Out
